Landfill for hazardous and non-hazardous wastes

Sovreco Ltd is the owner of two dumps; one for non-hazardous waste and another of hazardous waste. Garbage that can be disposed by company are listed in Integrated Enviromental Authorisation (IEA) released by Calabria region, that gives a list of European Waste Catalogue (EWC) helpful to identify waste that can be allocate to disposal.

Constructive Criteria.

Legislaton identifies minimum requirements of area destined to realise landfills e prescrive la modalità costruttiva degli stessi. Brevemente sono previsti:
  1. Plants for inert waste;
  2. Plants for special hazardous waste;
  3. Plants for special non-hazardous waste.
The two plants managed by Sovreco are: one for special rifiuti speciali non pericolosihazardous waste, and the other one for special non-hazardous waste; they are neighbouring and cover an area of 150.000 Sq m for hazardous waste plant and of 190.000 Sq m for the non-hazardous one.

Our plants fully meet requirements provided for by the law: particularly is expected that the substrate of basis and the flank of the garbage dump must be a natural geological formation that meets all requirements of permeability and thickness at least equivalent to the result of the following standards:

  • Dump for non-hazardous waste: k ≤ 1 x 10-9 m/s e s ≥ 1 m;
  • Dump for hazardous waste: k ≤ 1 x 10-9 m/s e s ≥ 5 m.

The substrate ensures the basin’s fraud-proofing and consequently the guarantee that there are no leakage of leachate in the environmental media involved.

It should be noted that geological characteristics of Sovreco’s site are of excellent quality for this type of plant; under a blanket of filtering soils and of a thickness of a few meters there is a powerful formation of Pleistocene blue clay that reaches the depth of 400 meters, with a thickness far more from 5 meters required for hazardous waste dump (1 meter for non-hazardous waste dump). Natural compaction measures also give a higher impermeability, more high than that requested; the natural characteristic of this site, makes it perfect in environmental terms.

Over the substrate is foreseen the installation, on the basis and down the basin’s flanks, of a tarp made of HDPE (high density polyethylene) and of a non-woven which has a protective function.

The basis has a slope for the purpose of channel the leachate toward a point where is placed a collection sump made of reinforced concrete from which develop 2 twin piping in stainless steel who come to country level.

Inside the piping, at the bottom near the sump, there are two sump pumps issuing the accumulated leachate up to a storage pool.

Outside companies load the leachate on dedicated tanker trucks, to bring it to specialised companies for the treatment. To advance leachate discharge over the sump, the entire base is covered with horizontal piping made of HDPE protected by a 50 cm of layer of gravel, instead on the flanks there are geocomposite draining tarps.
